Mats Hummels reveals sole reason why he turned down Manchester United transfer

Bayern Munich new-boy Mats Hummels has revealed that he would have considered joining Manchester United over the German champions if there were to be Champions League football at Old Trafford next season.

The 27-year-old maintained that the club would have been a perfect fit for him with the asset of playing Champions League football in 2016/17.

“Fundamentally, England, Spain and Germany were the relevant leagues I could see myself playing football in,” Hummels told Suddeutsche Zeitung, as per the Daily Mail.

“But at this stage there just was not that one English club where the overall package was fitting.

“The overall package means: a club which fascinates me; a club I have always wanted to join, and where the sporting constellation is right, and which of course plays Champions League football next season. And because of the latter one club was ruled out, and you can envision which club that was.”

Louis Van Gaal was relieved of his services as Manchester United manager after failing to deliver a top four finish in his second season at the club, and this seems to have influenced the ability to attract top players to Old Trafford.

Despite United missing out on Hummels, José Mourinho has already added strength to his arsenal of centre-backs, with the signing of Ivory Coast international Eric Bailly from Villarreal.
