‘Rooney and Carrick have been carrying Rashford at Manchester United’ – Paul Lambert

Paul Lambert, former Aston Villa and Norwich manager, has claimed that senior players such as Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney have been carrying Marcus Rashford since his sudden emergence in the United first team last season.

Rashford made his United debut in February, yet his impressive performances nailed him a spot in England’s EURO 2016 squad.

“Wayne Rooney is carrying him, Michael Carrick is carrying him – people carry you when you’re young,” he told BBC 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, as per Squawka.

“When you’re a young player you can make as many mistakes as you want and you know the critics won’t be too harsh on you. When you become 22, 23, 24 and start to become a main player, then you can be criticised.

“Rashford might start, he might not, but the expectation will be on Ibrahimovic, Rooney and the same lads who have been carrying the club for a few years.”

Despite Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival at Old Trafford, the fans still want to see Rashford on the pitch, and Lambert believes he should be given time to learn from any mistakes he might make.
