Manchester United legend Gary Neville claims Jose Mourinho has £200m to spend on transfers

Manchester United legend and former defender Gary Neville has claimed that Jose Mourinho will be handed a £200 million transfer kitty this summer to bolster his squad for the next campaign.

Following a 2-0 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates, the Red Devils remain four points off the final Champions League berth currently held by local rivals Manchester City, whilst winning the Europa League continues to be the most promising route for United to qualify for next season’s Champions League football.

Despite setting a new club record of 25 successive unbeaten games in a single top-flight season, Mourinho’s men have faced severe criticism for their dismal record at Old Trafford this campaign. Manchester United have registered 10 home draws and one defeat at home in the Premier League this season and Gary Neville insisted that the Red Devils will be ready to spend big once again this summer.

Neville said on Monday Night Football: “Manchester United have the largest chequebook in the world at the moment in terms of fees. Jose Mourinho has been unbelievable in the transfer market over the years.

“They got £45m back for Schneiderlin and Depay and maybe if (David) De Gea leaves it will be £60m or £70m – so he’s going to have £200m to spend. He has only signed four players in one transfer window.”

Manchester United have been linked with high profile arrivals including Atletico Madrid star striker Antoine Griezmann, AS Monaco’s teen sensation Kylian Mbappe and PSG defender Marquinhos.

Neville expressed his frustration with Mourinho’s negative tactics against the bigger sides but claimed that the former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager is simply not satisfied with the squad left behind by his predecessor Louis van Gaal.

“I thought they should challenge for the title this season, so the performance in the league this season is unacceptable,” Neville added.

“There’s 12 points I can point towards at home that would have them close to Chelsea. It’s not good, but in his first season when he’s obviously found the squad’s not as good as he thought it would be, he deserves another 12 months.

“He’s only signed four players for Manchester United. Once he’s signed eight or 10 and is a year further forward I would be asking a question if he was playing a back six in all these big away games.”

Manchester United will now host Celta Vigo on Thursday in the second leg of Europa League semi final having a slim one goal advantage before they travel to North London to face Tottenham, who were left downhearted on Monday after Chelsea closed in on the Premier League title with a promising 3-0 home win that confirmed Middlesbrough’s relegation from the English top flight.
