According to Tuesday’s reports in the Manchester Evening News, United are ‘not in the race’ for AS Monaco midfielder Fabinho, with José Mourinho targeting Eric Dier and Nemanja Matic instead.
Fabinho played a key role in Monaco’s fantastic 2016/17 season, where they excelled in the Champions League and won the Ligue 1 title.
Fabinho mostly plays in a defensive midfield role, but can also operate at right-back, and this versatility is something that many wanted to see at Old Trafford next season.
Reports before the summer transfer window opened suggested Mourinho wanted Eric Dier at Old Trafford, and the latest reports from the MEN support this.
The other reported target, Matic, excelled at Chelsea under Mourinho, leading them to a league title, where the Serbian was a key component to their success.
With Michael Carrick getting older, it is likely that Mourinho will bring in a central midfielder to take the weight off of Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba’s shoulders, yet it won’t be Fabinho if the MEN are correct with their reports.
