Manchester United given big positive in race for Eric Dier

According to The Guardian, Eric Dier is open to a move to Manchester United. With Romelu Lukaku being all but tied up, United will now no doubt be keen to press on in the transfer market and bolster other areas in the squad that certainly do need strengthening. Whilst some fans remain keen on new attacking prospects such as the likes of, James Rodriguez, Ivan Perisic and Alvaro Morata, another position that United need to prioritise is undoubtedly with a new defensive midfielder. With names such as Fabinho and Matic being mentioned, there is one player that United continue to be linked with, Tottenham’s Eric Dier.

The English midfielder certainly divides fan’s opinion, with some welcoming the proposition of Dier joining and others voicing their disinterest in the reported £50m asking price. This has reportedly been the major stumbling block in United’s perusal of Dier, with Ed Woodward being put off over the potential proposition of negotiating with the stubborn Daniel Levy. Although the current transfer market is considered as rather crazy, following the mass inflation of player’s prices, one must question Tottenham’s asking price of Dier and whether he is worth this fee.

Despite this, Jose Mourinho is allegedly still keeping close tabs on the Englishman and remains a keen fan with a defensive midfielder becoming the new priority this Summer window. Following reports today from various sources, Tottenham have however responded to United’s enquiry and have bluntly stated they are not willing to entertain any bid that doesn’t match their £50m valuation.

Although United fans have openly expressed their desire towards Fabinho, it does seem as though Mourinho’s top midfielder targets remain as either Dier or Matic. However, following the news regarding United’s capture of Lukaku over Chelsea, there is certainly a temporary feeling of distaste from the blue side of London towards United. One must now question as to whether Chelsea would be open to strengthening United’s current squad even more and perhaps, Eric Dier now seems the most realistic option. Although no official bid has been reported, fans should keep their ears peeled for further developments in the Eric Dier rumours.
