Mourinho: Lindelof has the quality I’m looking for

Manchester United manager José Mourinho believes summer signing Victor Lindelöf has the qualities to help his team unlock stubborn opposition defenses this season.

Speaking after his club’s 3-0 victory over FC Basel in United’s first match of the Champions League group stage, Mourinho said that the ex-Benfica man could offer an attacking outlet for his team.

“The nature of the Premier League is also changing and I think we need defenders that can play, we need defenders that can come into the midfield, bringing the ball, passing, because it’s becoming really defensive and we are going to face many teams with five in the back, plus two, three in front with blocks of defensive attitude,” said Mourinho.

“And Victor, out of all our defenders, is probably the one with more quality when he attacks the space in midfield, so yes he is going to play midfield, he is going to play in the Premier League.”

The 23-year old’s attacking threat was on display against Basel as he forayed into midfield a couple of times and made some crisp forward passes to his teammates.

Lindelöf’s 90 minutes against Basel were his first since he played in United’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on August 8th.

United boss Mourinho is slowly integrating Lindelöf into the squad to help him adapt to the English game. The Portuguese hinted that the Swedish international would make his next appearance against Burton in the Football League Cup on September 20th.
