Darmian gunning for repeat of last season’s League Cup success

Manchester United are set for their opening fixture in the Carabao Cup this evening, a competition that the Red Devils will be keen to secure for the second season running. The League Cup trophy was, of course, Jose Mourinho’s first major trophy as a United manager, the fourth time that the Portuguese tactician has claimed the trophy in England. It should certainly not have come as a surprise to many to have seen Mourinho add another three trophies to his already illustrious collection, as Mourinho does of course hold a reputation of being a serial winner at every club he has managed.

Mourinho’s desire to win is certainly something that has been embraced by many players in his squad and that attitude is already being showcased through United’s ecstatic start to this season. There is certainly an element of confidence surrounding the squad at Old Trafford this season and Matteo Darmian is feeling confident in retaining the League cup for a second season coming. Speaking in a recent interview, the Italian stated:

“I thinks it’s always difficult to defend a title, but we will try. We want to win every trophy. When we are on the pitch, we try to win every game and that’s our mentality. To play at home is always important and good, but every game is different and every game is difficult so we have to be ready, we have to prepare well for the game and we have to win.”

“We’ve started very well, we are playing very well. To do that, we need to work hard and that’s it, trying to win every game is not easy but we are ready for that challenge. Of course, to win a trophy is always important, because it’s a very good feeling and helps give us confidence to continue working hard and reaching our objectives. I think it gave us more confidence and it was good to win a trophy.”

United fans will certainly be sharing Darmian’s desire to claim another trophy this season and will expecting a victory over Burton Albion tonight. Although the trophy is perhaps seen as rather a lesser competition in the eyes of some fans, Mourinho is certainly not a manager to take a step back in any game of football and will be expecting a strong showing from the team.
