Manchester United continue their fine Premier League form, winning away to Southampton 1-0. It wasn’t the prettiest victory of the season, but it was a nice sight to see United hold on for a close victory.
United travelled to St Mary’s stadium to face Southampton in the hopes of maintaining their phenomenal start to the season. Mourinho named an unchanged lineup to the team that beat Everton last weekend.
United started sloppily, as Southampton dictated the pace early on. A corner was poorly defended by United, and the ball fell to Redmond, but he was unable to keep his shot on target.
United took advantage of the missed opportunity, grabbing a goal from Lukaku. The goal admittedly came against the run of play, but Mourinho won’t be bothered. Young danced around his marker out wide, and whipped in a delightful cross to Lukaku. His initial effort was saved, but the ball fell back into the Belgian’s path, and he made no mistake with the rebound. Just like that, it was 1-0 United.
Rashford went close with a long distance free kick. Forster wasn’t close, but the shot went just wide of the post.
The second half was a typical Mourinho performance. Southampton had a majority of possession, but couldn’t create too many chances.
United made defensive substitutions throughout the second half, as Ander Herrera, Smalling, and Blind came on at various points.
Herrera had a chance to close off the game, and Lukaku found him in space at the top of the box, but the Spaniard hit it over the bar.
There were some scenes at the end of the match. José Mourinho was sent off, but made sure to take his time walking down the tunnel. Southampton won a late corner, and sent keeper Forster forward. Bailly cleared it away, and the referee blew for full time.
Manchester United travel to Russia next, as they face CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday.
