Jose Mourinho is demanding that he receive a £3million-a-year pay hike before signing a new contract at Manchester United.

The 54-year-old is currently in the second year of a three year contract which sees him earn a yearly salary of £12 million. It is believed that the Portuguese’s agent, Jorge Mendes, will hold talks with Man United vice-chairman Ed Woodward to discuss a new contract in the new year.

Mourinho enjoyed a relatively successful first year at United. After capturing the EFL Cup in February, Mourinho’s men booked their place in this season’s Champions League after defeating Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm.

In light of these achievements, the former Chelsea boss believes he deserves to be rewarded with a pay hike.

In recent weeks questions have been raised regarding Mourinho’s future as United manager.

Following the club’s 0-0 draw against Liverpool, a French interview was released wherein Mourinho revealed that he would not finish his career at the club, and spoke admiringly of Paris Saint-Germain.

There have also been reports that the two-time Champions League winner is growing frustrated with the United board’s relaxed approach to beginning contract extension talks following the club’s Europa League triumph.

Despite his remarks, Mourinho has stated that he is happy in his current position and is not looking to leave United.

“I am happy here – and I love my players,” said Mourinho.

“You try to create a story because of my words after defeat at Huddersfield – but there is no story.”
