Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has revealed that José Mourinho is ‘hard’ on his squad, but for all the right reasons.

Martial has been in impressive form for club and country of late, and is reaping the rewards of Mourinho’s stern coaching methods.

It has been a regular occurrence that Marcus Rashford has started in favour of Martial on the left-wing this season, which has led many to believe that Mourinho is unhappy with the Frenchman. Despite this, Martial has revealed that this is not the case, and that the pair have a good relationship.

“He [Mourinho] is hard with all of us and he is hard with me, there is no question,” Martial told Premier League TV, as reported by the MEN.

“But I know that it’s for my benefit. But I also know that he really likes me as a person, so there’s no issue about the discipline being for the wrong reasons.”

“But the objective, of course, is to have all of us in good condition, and being fit to play every match and that is what I’m hoping to do.

“At the beginning we didn’t know each other too well, but over time we have got to know each other better. He knows my strengths and my weaknesses, such as they are, but the outcome is that we are learning to give everything in the right way.”

Martial’s rise in form has not gone unnoticed either, as he won the October Player of the Month award at Old Trafford, and earned his first start for France in over a year against Germany on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old did not disappoint for Les Bleus, either, as he produced a stunning piece of skill before putting the ball on a plate for Alexandre Lacazette to fire home the opening goal.

Martial will definitely be in contention to start for United as club football returns this weekend, with the Red Devils facing a tough test against Newcastle on Saturday.
