Manchester United could sell midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan in order to make room for Arsenal attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil, according to the latest reports from the Daily Mail.

United manager Jose Mourinho retains an interest in Ozil, 29, and in an effort to sign the German international on a free-transfer at the end of the season, the Manchester club could look to shift Mkhitaryan, 28, out.

The Armenian arrived at United from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2016 to much praise but has failed to reach the heights he reached in the Bundesliga.

The former Shakhtar man has been left out of Mourinho’s previous seven out of eight match day squads and has been replaced by Jesse Lingard as United’s first choice number-ten in the Portuguese manager’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.

As for Ozil, the latest reports have it that the Arsenal man would favour a reunion with Mourinho, a manager he played under for three seasons at Real Madrid, rather than opting for a move to Barcelona who also retain an interest in him.

Arsenal are keen on extending the German’s contract; however, Ozil’s wage demands are a big sticking point in negotiations at the moment.

The former Real Madrid man has already turned down Arsenal’s new contract offer which would see him earn £235,000 and is reportedly keen on landing a contract which would push his weekly earnings to close to £300,000.

Rumours have surfaced recently that Ozil has signed a new contract with Arsenal, yet this could be just to attract a fee, instead of the German star leaving the club on a free this summer. Arsenal tweeted a thread of Ozil’s finest moments for the club, leading many to believe the midfielder has put pen to paper in North London.
