United eyeing move for Rochdale’s Luke Matheson

Manchester United along with Premier League rivals Chelsea are eyeing a move to sign Rochdale defender Luke Matheson, reports Peter O’Rourke of ESPN.

Matheson, 14, is considered to be one of Rochdale’s most promising prospects in recent years.  The teenage right-back’s performances for the academy this season have earned him rave-reviews and led to him being included in the first-team’s match-day squad for the club’s last two games.

Both Man United and Chelsea have sent scouts to watch Matheson in action and have also made enquiries about signing the player as both clubs look to continue their policy of signing the best under-16s players across the country.

Rochdale is keen on holding onto Matheson; however, the allure of Premier League money may be too much for the League One club to turn down.

Playing under the watchful eye of Rochdale manager Keith Hill, a man who has helped in the development of Premier League mainstays Danny Drinkwater and John Stones, signing the 14-year-old right-back early on could be money well-spent for United.
