Lingard and Lukaku late goals send United through to the next round of the FA Cup

Manchester United have advanced to the next round of the FA Cup, beating Derby County 2-0 at Old Trafford. Another Lingard screamer opened the scoring, and Lukaku added a 2nd late to secure the result.

Since it was an early round of a cup competition, Mourinho rotated the starting XI as per usual. Romero got the start in goal, while the defence featured Smalling and Blind, with Lindelof coming in at right back. Mkhitaryan was given a chance to perform in the midfield, while Rashford was given the start at striker.

United controlled the early portions of the game, keeping possession while creating half chances. A long distance shot from Pogba was easily dealt with, and Lingard put a shot over the bar.

Lindelof got forward on the overlap, and hit a wonderful low ball across goal, but Rashford was unable to pounce on the cross.

United then had 2 chances to score from free kicks, but both efforts were saved by Carson in the Derby goal. First was Mata, who tried to hit it to the goalkeepers side, but Carson was alert to it. Pogba’s free kick came a bit later. It was well hit, and had eyes for the top corner, but Carson was able to get a hand to it.

Rashford has the best chance of the first half soon after, and really should have scored. A short corner was played to Mkhitaryan, who picked out an unmarked Rashford with a superb cross. Rashford fluffed his lines however, as the ball glanced off his head, and off of the far post.

Lukaku made his return to the team at halftime, coming on for Mkhitaryan.

He made an immediate impact, getting a shot off that the Derby defence had to block. The ball fell to Pogba, to tried a curling shot to the back post, but he hit it just wide.

Lukaku turned provider again, getting down the sideline before whipping in a decent cross to the back post. It went just over the head of Rashford, and out of play.

Derby created their first chance of the game, when former United man Tom Lawrence dribbled up the field and hit a low shot to the corner, but his effort was saved by Romero.

Anthony Martial came on for Juan Mata.

United continued to pressure, and came closer and closer to grabbing an opening goal. Lindelof carried the ball forward, before cutting inside and laying it off to Pogba. The Frenchman hit it first time, but his shot bounced just wide of the post.

United got even closer without scoring when Rashford hit a post with a low shot. He settled the ball on the right wing, before smashed it to the far post, but it hit the post and bounced out of play.

Lukaku then played in Lingard, and his shot was saved by the Derby keeper. The rebound fell to Pogba, who had an empty net to shoot at, but he fluffed his lines as well, mishitting a volley very far wide.

Fellaini made his return from injury, coming on for Marcus Rashford.

United finally made the breakthrough 5 minutes from time, and it was Lingard playing the hero yet again. Lukaku settled a pass and layed it off to Lingard, who took a touch before smashing a volley past Carson.

It was 2 for Manchester soon after, as the Red Devils took advantage on the counter after Derby through numbers forward. Lukaku drove the ball forward and passed it to Martial, who gave it right back to hit. Lukaku made no mistake with the finish, hitting it past the Derby keeper.

The 2-0 scoreline was a fair reflection of the match, as United were the dominant team throughout the 90 minutes.

United’s next match is on the 15th, as the Red Devils host Stoke City at Old Trafford.
