‘Must win’ FA Cup would be a big title for United, says Van Gaal

On Saturday, Manchester United will lock horns with Crystal Palace at Wembley to compete for the FA Cup trophy, a piece of silverware the Red Devils have failed to capture since 2004.

Eleven-time FA Cup winners United will look to end their three-year trophy drought with a win on Saturday, which will give a silver lining to a fairly bleak season under Louis van Gaal.

The Dutchman is yet to convince the United faithful that he is capable of holding the title of United boss, and many want to see him leave in the summer.

Van Gaal spoke to reporters on Thursday, insisting that an FA Cup victory is far more important for the club than himself.

“It is not good to speak about my interests. It is important for the club, the players, the manager and his staff,” he said.

“I have read that the last FA Cup (we won) is 2004, so also for Manchester United it is a big title.

“We are playing in the most prestigious temple of England. It confirms how important it is.

“You must win these games. In one match you can lose a lot. You have to cope with that pressure.”

The emergence of many successful youngsters during Van Gaal’s reign has been one of the few positives of his time as United boss, and winning the FA Cup would be a great way to end what could possibly be the 64-year-old’s final season at Old Trafford.
