Memphis admits he was ‘p****d off’ at Manchester United substitute role

Manchester United winger Memphis Depay hardly had the perfect debut season in red, but the 22-year-old has insisted that he will not stop believing in himself, despite his rough start.

Memphis took to his social media platforms to issue a video message to the fans, admitting that he was ‘p****d off’ with his substitute role under Louis van Gaal, but will continue working hard.

Memphis was included in 58 of United’s matchday squads, before he was left out of the squad for the FA Cup final victory against Crystal Palace, yet most of these inclusions were from the bench

“It’s not been a bad year and it’s not been a good year. It’s right there in the middle. I have more expectations for myself and the fans as well, and that’s normal,” he said.

“It’s been new for me this season, to play in the Premier League, but the experience I get this year is important. Also, the things I have to do, sometimes I made a mistake or I haven’t played good for a game, you get on the bench, it’s new for me as well.

“Last season, I was playing and I was scoring every game. This year, it’s 50-50, 50 per cent of the games in the season I have played, I have some games on the bench for 90 minutes as well. That’s new and that’s hard and that p****s you off, to be honest, sometimes. But you need to keep going, keep believing in yourself.”

“You’re the first person to believe in yourself, no matter what, you have to keep your chest up.

“Sometimes it’s hard but I’m still young, 22, but I think that’s for everybody, never give up, if you believe in something you can achieve, you will make it and if you put everything in it.

“And that’s my motto: Dream, believe and achieve. But I don’t want to give up on anything.”

Memphis had a stunning final season in the Eredivisie for PSV, scoring 22 goals in the league alone. Whether he can reproduce this kind of form in the Premier League is yet to be seen, but under a new manager, Memphis just might return as the type of player he was for PSV.
