Daley Blind ‘keen’ to work under Mourinho despite concerns over United future

On Tuesday, Sky Sports News reported that the futures of Daley Blind and Juan Mata were in jeopardy, as newly appointed United boss Jose Mourinho sees them as surplus to requirement in the squad. Despite this, Blind has said he is willing to give it his all to stay at the club.

Blind had a brilliant 2015/16 season in Manchester, and although he would prefer to play elsewhere on the pitch, he adapted to the centre-back role he was assigned to with ease.

Many called for the former-Ajax man to be the club’s player-of-the-year, but he was pipped to the award by the exceptional David de Gea.

Blind’s calming influence on the ball and his incredible ability to read the game as it unfolds more than made up for his lack of power and pace in the United defence, and was one of Louis van Gaal’s finest assets in his final season.

The rumours concerning Blind’s future is worrying for United fans, as it does make sense, considering that Blind’s build and play-style differs from Mourinho’s ideal defensive player.

However, Blind insists he will fight for his place and looks forward to working under the former Chelsea boss. He told Dutch media outlet NOS: “I am looking forward to working with Mourinho. We will have to wait and see whether anything changes for me.

“I will just give my all and work hard. Mourinho is a manager who has achieved a lot and I am keen to work with him.

“I might not be as big as Pepe [Real Madrid] but I think I have shown in the Premier League that I can hold my own defensively.

“We conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League and I think we got the most clean sheets. That’s something to be proud of. I played nearly every game and that is a good feeling.

“You might be looking for a certain statement, but I will just give my all under Mourinho.”
