According to the latest reports of the Telegraph, United are just £9m away from landing Inter Milan forward Ivan Perisic.
The Red Devils are attempting to push through a deal before Inter jet off to China next week for their pre-season tour.
Negotiations for Perisic have been complicated as Inter are reportedly frustrated at United’s strategy to land the Croatian.
Inter were desperate to raise funds in order to escape a strike from UEFA over FFP laws, and United tried to exploit that by offering initial bids of €30m and €32m.
Despite this, Inter raised the funds through a string of smaller deals, meaning they escaped any ruling from UEFA.
However, United still withhold their interest in Perisic, and reports of a third bid of £40m have surfaced. The improved offer is apparently still not enough to convince Inter to allow the 28-year-old to leave, as they value him at around £49m.
Mourinho is currently with the squad in LA, yet Ed Woodward has stayed behind in London to oversee the Perisic negotiations.
