Swansea City 0-4 Manchester United: Mourinho’s men finish off Swans in style

Manchester United have continued their dominant start to the Premier League season, defeating Swansea City 4-0. A Bailly goal right before the end of the half gave United the lead. In the second half, an explosion of goals from Lukaku, Pogba, and Martial made it 4, making it 8 in the first 2 league matches.

United went with the same lineup that dismantled West Ham the week before. Swansea, who had just sold star man Sigurdsson, changed to a back 3 to combat United’s potent offence.

Swansea were the much better team to start. Andre Ayew flew down the wing, and his chip to the backpost hit the bar, saving United from an early deficit.

Marcus Rashford then got on the ball to a chorus of boos from the Swansea fans. This was due to Rashford diving to win a penalty last season vs the Welsh side. They might’ve got to him, as he dragged a shot wide soon after.

United then hit the crossbar themselves. A free kick was whipped into the box by Mata, and Phil Jones got his head to it. However, the United defender misread the flight of the ball, and it hit off of his shoulder, onto the bar, and out of play.

Swansea left back Olsson went for an ambitious overhead kick, but the attempt was easily saved by De Gea.

Then, the game began to heat up. Rashford was taken out by a couple of Swansea defenders on consecutive plays. Soon after, Pogba was booked for a late tackle on Tom Carroll. Pogba was late on another tackle afterwards, but luckily avoided a second yellow.

A big chance fell to Rashford, as a defensive miscue by the Swansea defenders put the youngster through on goal. The Englishman fluffed his lines, trying to chip Fabianski in goal, but the Swansea keeper stood his ground.

United were able to grab a goal right before halftime. A corner was whipped in, and Pogba headed it towards goal. The attempt was saved onto the bar, but Bailly was able to tap in the rebound. It was the first goal for the club for the Ivorian.

United rode the momentum into the start of the second half, winning a wealth of corners. Nothing came of any of them, however.

Chances were few and far between in the second half. A Mkhitaryan long shot deflected off Lukaku out of bounds. A Swansea corner was headed over the bar. Another corner went all the way through to the back post, but no Swansea player was able to get the vital touch.

José Mourinho, trying to swing the match back in United’s favor, brought on Martial and Fellaini, for Rashford and Mata. Same starting lineup, and the same substitutions from the boss.

The substitutions were beyond perfect.

Martial won the ball in the midfield, and played it quickly to Mkhitaryan. The Armenian picked out Lukaku, who found himself space in the penalty area, and slotted home for the second goal of the game.

Right after kickoff, Pogba then intercepted the ball in midfield, and played Mkhitaryan. The winger carried the ball up the pitch, and played Pogba through on goal, who eloquently dinked it over Fabianski.

Incredibly, after that, United grabbed a fourth. Lukaku brought down a long ball, and found Pogba, who played Martial through. The young Frenchman calmly cut inside, and placed in far post, as he tends to do in those situations.

In the span of 3 minutes, United scored 3 goals.

United killed off the rest of the match, leaving the Liberty Stadium with all 3 points.

United’s next fixture is a home match vs Leicester City, on Saturday the 26th.
