Manchester United midfielder, Juan Mata, is planning to remain at the club on a long-term basis, despite alleged interest from his former club Valencia, according to reports.

According to Spanish outlet Superdeporte, Valencia are very keen on resigning the flamboyant midfielder, in order of strengthening their chances of a top three finish in La Liga this season. Mata, who left Valencia back in 2011 to join Chelsea, has reportedly already turned the chance to return to the Spanish down in the past before and is prepared to do so again this January.

This speculation has no doubt arisen following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez, who is being backed to take Mata’s position in this current United side. Having started 17 league games so far this season, the Spaniard has however established himself as one of Jose Mourinho’s most trusted players, predominantly being utilised out on the right hand side with a license to roam.

However, with Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard both currently performing at the level they are, it does seem that Mata is the most likely candidate to make way for the incoming and highly anticipated Sanchez. The Spaniard, never being one to kick up a fuss, is however prepared to stay and fight for his place at a club where he is reportedly very comfortable.

Although fans will be eager to see Sanchez pulling on the famous Red Devil shirt, it is still of course refreshing to hear that fan favourite Mata, will not be pushed out the exit door. In fact, this added depth in quality to the squad, something that United have been lacking across the last 3-4 years, is indeed another sign at the progress the club are making under Jose Mourinho.
