Solskjaer on Zlatan return, Chris Smalling departure and more

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer adressed the media ahead of United’s visit to St. Mary’s stadium on Saturday and was quizzed on some of the weeks hottest talking points.

On possible Zlatan return
“It would be different if he was 28 next month and not 38! It was unfortunate the injury he suffered here but I don’t think it will happen. I don’t think he was serious either.”

On Alexis Sanchez departure
“I think Alexis needed to go. At the moment he’s been here now for 18 months and it hasn’t really worked out for him. For him as well to restart and playing regularly and scoring goals will benefit everyone. We will be watching every weekend to see Romelu and Alexis playing together.

On forward options
“I’m trusting Anthony [Martial], Marcus [Rashford] and Mason [Greenwood] to be our centre-forwards this season. We’ve got Wingers in [Tahith] Chong, Daniel James & [Andreas] Pereira so we’ve got loads of options. It’s time for our boys to feel that pressure, responsibility and be more robust.

On Chris Smalling
“It came up in the last couple of days and of course we sat down yesterday and discussed it. I couldn’t promise Chris regular football but I think he will enjoy the experience over there. I’m sure he’ll come back better from it.”

On Matteo Darmian and Marcos Rojo
“I can see Matteo leaving, there’s been some interest from Italy there and he wants to go back home. Marcos is staying, for sure.”
