Patrice Evra’s role in Brandon Williams’ breakthrough season

Patrice Evra. Uncle Pat. Beloved by United supporters for his service to the club and his hilarious “I LOVE THIS GAME” videos on social media. You can add another reason to appreciate him – he played a part in this season being Brandon Williams’ breakthrough season in the United first team.

In an interview with COPA90, Evra revealed that he pleaded with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to give Brandon Williams an opportunity in the Manchester United first team.

Brandon Williams made his first team debut against Rochdale in the Carabao Cup in 2019 and officially made the transition to the first team squad a month or so after. His performances this season have apparently halted United’s search for a new left-back in the transfer market.

This may not have been the case if not for Patrice Evra. Evra said that “I’m doing my coaching badges at Manchester United, I go like two weeks in a month to do my course, and someone sent me a video about Brandon.” Evra took note of Williams’ “Mancunian fight, spirit, desire”. As a result, Evra told Solskjaer, “trust me Ole, since I left I can see he can play at left-back… please give him a chance.”

Brandon Williams’ performances for the most part have ensured that Evra has felt that he placed his vote of confidence with the right player. Evra praised Williams, “to be fair he is playing so well and he is not disappointing anyone. He is the future.” It’s safe to say that as far as Brandon Williams is concerned, Evra really is “Uncle Pat.”
