Aaron Wan-Bissaka working on attacking traits in training

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has enjoyed a rather flawless debut campaign with Manchester United.

The Englishman has been a key-part of a much more consistent back four at Old Trafford this season, which has predominantly compromised of himself, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw.

United have already kept more Premier League sheets in comparison to last season, with still nine games to play. Wan-Bissaka has no doubt played his part in such a record – he tops every other member of the squad in terms of tackles and blocks made, and yet, he ranks 19th for average amount of fouls committed per game.

Jamie Carragher even labelled the 22-year-old the ‘best one v one’ defender in the world back in March, after his dominating display against Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling. Wan-Bissaka’s defensive attributes are simply superior to any other full-back in the league, and United’s £50m investment in the player has already looked like money well spent.

One area that is continuously being worked on though, is the youngster’s impact going forward. His tally of two assists in thirty-four games this season may not set stars alight, but his ability in the final third is ever increasing.

Wan-Bissaka has averaged 1.7 dribbles per game in the PL, with only Marcus Rashford averaging more in United’s quad. The former has a heavy duty to bring the ball forward down the flank, given that the side doesn’t actually possess a direct right-winger. This is a piece of key context for those critical of his assist numbers this season, as he tends to gain possession further back on the field.

This will hopefully be rectified come summer though, with the arrival of Jadon Sancho. Should a new RW arrive, they will be supported by an energetic in-behind, and likewise, Wan-Bissaka will equally benefit from having a consistent figure to overlap.

The Englishman was captured on a training video on Friday working on his crossing ability, maintaining a high position in the final third. United’s coaches no doubt recognise this in being an area that can be worked on, and the defender was beginning to show glimpses of improvement before lockdown.

Should the youngster develop in this area, he begin to transition into the most complete right-back on the planet.
