Close Call: United friendly vs Stoke City abandoned due to COVID-19

Near misses don’t get much closer than that. A practice game between United and Stoke City was due to take place this evening, only to be called off at the last minute, after Stoke manager Michael O’Neill tested positive for coronavirus.

As per the Mirror, the exhibition match was set to feature first-team players and would have been the first game back for many returning stars, such as Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba, who have only recently made their recovery from injury.

Fortunately, for all parties concerned, the Stoke side were already quarantined in a different part of Carrington, as part of United’s careful distancing measures. Once the test came back as positive, Solskjaer informed the as yet unaware United squad and the game was immediately abandoned

Whilst this was cutting extremely fine, it is thought that none of opposing team had come into contact with any of United’s players prior to or in the build-up to the game. However, there is no doubt that every precaution will be taken to ensure everyone’s safety.
