Werder Bremen Director, Frank Baumann, has confirmed his interest in Manchester United’s Tahith Chong, with the German club looking to bring the youngster in on loan for the 20/21 season.
The Red Devils are reportedly open to letting the Dutchman leave to gain some first-team experience, with there being limited opportunities at Old Trafford. Even without the potential arrival of Jadon Sancho, Chong has struggled for game-time this season, making just 11 appearances – only 3 of which have been starts.
At 20-years-of-age though, there has been no rush from the club to throw him in the deep end. The Dutchman has clearly outgrown the U23s, but he has often looked a little erratic at senior level. A loan move would serve as great experience for the developing winger, with Germany opening up as an ideal location.
We have seen an influx of younger players opt for this pathway in recent years, with the likes of Ethan Ampadu and Rabbi Matondo recently finding minutes in the Bundesliga.
One club that has emerged as the favourites to sign Chong is Werder Bremen, with their Director being very vocal about the situation. Speaking to Weser Kurier, he revealed: “He is a player who is interesting for us, no question about it. We need a player like him in the position he plays. We are in good talks with Manchester United, but there are several details to be agreed on.”
Given United’s new willingness to loan out their academy talents, this shouldn’t be a complicated transfer to conclude. The player will be open to making a name for himself elsewhere, and the German side are evidently keen.
