United set to miss the Premier League opening weekend

Having just experienced heartbreak in a European semi-final, Manchester United were granted a bit of good news today in the shape of an extended break before the new Premier League season, according to ESPN.

How English teams will manage to get enough rest and preparation before the start of the 2020/21 season has been the biggest talking point since the last campaign was brought to an accelerated close last month.

During non-international tournament years, players usually get the whole month of June to rest and recover before having to report back for club duty in the early days of July. This year, everything is different, football included.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, clubs have just over a month to rest and get back into training ahead of the September 12 Premier League opening weekend. But, there has been an exception made for the two Manchester clubs, United and City.

Since both were participating in the latter stages of the two European competitions, ESPN sources have reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s and Pep Guardiola’s men are set to be granted some extra time to prepare and will hence be excluded from the proceedings during game week one.

The full list of fixtures and their dates is set to be published by the Premier League no later than Friday, August 21, and naturally, it is yet to be determined how and when United and City will make up for their extra few days off.
