Harry Maguire unlikely to face jail time, even if found guilty claims Greek lawyer

Harry Maguire is unlikely to face jail time, even if he is found guilty of aggravated assault and attempted bribery of a police officer.

The Manchester United captain was arrested on Thursday evening in Mykonos, Greece, after an altercation involving himself and a police officer. The origins of the incident are still being speculated, but Maguire allegedly ‘hit’ an officer.

Some reports have claimed that the English international was being ‘rallied’ up by rival fans and was subject to verbal abuse. It’s also been claimed that his sister, Daisy Maguire, was stabbed in the arm.

Maguire has denied both of the charges put forward against him.

Tuesday marks the first day of his trial in Greece, but the 27-year-old is unlikely to face any jail time, even if he is found guilty of the crimes.

This is according to Greek lawyer Zannis Panayotakopoulos (via Sky Sports), who has stated: “Bribes are very serious crimes in Greece. But I believe that it has become a misdemeanour. The highest sentence can be five years imprisonment and a fine. But most of these crimes have big and heavy fines and definitely not prison time. In Greece, in our legal system, we have second chances.”

Maguire will not be present for his trial in Syros today, but Sky claim that his lawyers will ‘argue on his behalf that a dispute began with two Albanian men’. They also report that Daisy Maguire was indeed left with a ‘bloodied arm’.
