Left-back Alvaro Fernandez, 17, backed to do well at United following Real Madrid switch

Manchester United have been moving around the youth transfer market with a lot of intent as of late.

The recent deadline day acquisitions of two 18-year-old wingers — Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo Traore — with the intentions of seeing them both in the first-team picture as soon as possible further proves that.

But, those two aside, United have also been investing very heavily into the academy setup.

17-year-old full back Alvaro Fernandez certainly looks like one of those signings that has a ton of upside for the future — both short and long-term.

The Real Madrid academy product rejected a contract offer from the La Liga champions this summer in favor of an Old Trafford switch. With United’s depth being quite thin at the left-back position, Fernandez saw a route into the first team mapped out for him ahead of the move.

More context as to why Fernandez opted to move to England to ‘make his United dream’ is given in the AS article, as reported by Sport Witness. But the youngsters talent is spoken of in high regard, and he is backed “to do well” and progress quickly at United.

Fernandez initially joined United’s U18 side in the summer but has already made U23 appearances in big games against Arsenal and Everton, showing significant strides made in a very short time.

The AS report suggests that Fernandez’s progression within the club’s hierarchy will be based heavily around his performances. And should he continue to impress, he could be ‘steps away’ from first-team involvement.
