Solskjær backs Edinson Cavani after inappropriate Instagram post

Ole Gunnar Solskjær has backed Edinson Cavani after the FA enquired about a post he made on Instagram following his Man of the Match display against Southampton.

The Uruguayan forward has come under fire for a comment on his Instagram post which could be interpreted as offensive by some.

The phrase used on his social profile is however used as a term of endearment in his native country but the manager insists that education is important and that they back the fight against discrimination.

Edinson Cavani and Manchester released a statement on the incident on Monday evening.

“The message I posted after the game on Sunday was intended as an affectionate greeting to a friend, thanking him for his congratulations after the game,” Cavani said.

“The last thing I wanted to do was cause offence to anyone. I am completely opposed to racism and deleted the message as soon as it was explained that it can be interpreted differently. I would like to sincerely apologise for this.”

Solskjær discussed the comment in his pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrows vital Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain.

“We have communicated with Edinson [Cavani] and he is really sorry for the mistake he’s made. No malicious intent at all, just an affectionate greeting to a friend,” he said.

“He’s been asked by the FA to explain and we will support him. It’s one of those unfortunate situations where he’s just come into the country and in Uruguay it’s been used in a different way.

“We support him, but we also support the FA. We want to be in the fight against discrimination. I’m sure Edinson has learned the hard way.”
