Manchester United identify two positions to strengthen in January

Manchester United can never escape transfer speculation and whilst it seems as though the season has somewhat just started, January is already looming.

Inevitably, rumours and talk have begun picking up traction, with the Red Devils being linked with various names. Many are, however, predicting the upcoming market to be a quiet one. Although some fans begin to trickle back into stadiums, the financial implications from COVID-19 has scarred clubs, and recovery will take time, even for the elite.

Many will be more hesitant than usual to dip into the January window, a four-week period which serves as a tricky time frame to conduct business even in ordinary circumstances. The Red Devils themselves rarely look to rely on the winter window to invest, but in a tightly-fought Premier League season, it could prove significant in elevating the side up the table. Readers won’t need reminding of the impact that Bruno Fernandes’ arrival had.

As per the MEN, United are keeping their options open. The news outlet claims that the club are ‘are prioritising right-wing and central defensive targets in the New Year’. No names are specifically mentioned, but it would be presumed that summer target Jadon Sancho fits the bill for the former.

Amad Diallo is set to arrive on January 1, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be keen to bring in more nurtured attackers to surround his youngsters.

It won’t come as a surprise to hear that United are after a new CB either, a position that many fans point out in needing to be addressed. Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are the preferred duo at the back, but neither are exactly being pushed for their starting positions.

Solskjaer and co may adopt a flexible approach to the January window, as despite the inconsistent start to the season, United find themselves in a position to challenge for the title. They may, however, need an extra push to mount such a charge.
