Romano now expects ‘out of this world’ midfielder will be a Man United player by transfer deadline

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that, barring any drastic last-minute changes, he expects Ederson to become a Manchester United player when the window opens.

The Red Devils ignited their pursuit several weeks ago in order to make the midfielder one of their first arrivals of the summer.

Now, it looks almost nailed on that he will be the first, as well as the first-ever acquisition under Michael Carrick.

It remains to be seen how much of a say the United boss is having in the side’s transfer business, given that responsibility is primarily on the shoulders of Football Director Jason Wilcox, along with CEO Omar Berrada.

Either way, Carrick will likely have to green-light any potential player and gauge whether they would be a suitable fit for his system next season.

Ederson, 26, had agreed personal terms with Atletico Madrid in March, but the Spaniards were unwilling to meet Atalanta’s £39 million price tag.

Atleti then turned their attention to Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Joao Gomes, who’d also been linked with an Old Trafford move, which paved the way for United to swoop in for Ederson.

The three-capped Brazilian, hailed as ‘out of this world’ by Fabio Capello, was not called up by Carlo Ancelotti to feature at the forthcoming World Cup, unlike his soon-to-be teammate Matheus Cunha and former Red Casemiro.

However, it means Ederson can spend near enough the entire summer at Carrington, getting to grips with the role he’ll play and Carrick’s plans for 2026/2027.

He won’t be the only midfielder through the doors in M16, either.

United are targeting a marquee-type signing who can fill the boots of seasoned veteran Casemiro, and they’ll no doubt want at least one new name to have Premier League experience.
