Romano confirms in shock afternoon update that on-loan Man Utd man has ‘returned’ to Carrington for pre-season

Andre Onana has ‘returned’ to Manchester United following the conclusion of his loan spell with Trabzonspor.

The news was confirmed by Fabrizio Romano this afternoon, who adds that the ‘current plan’ is for the goalkeeper to start his pre-season with Michael Carrick’s squad.

In the meantime, however, Trabzonspor are keen on adding Onana to their ranks again.

As there were no buy options included in his loan agreement, any potential transfer would now have to be negotiated with the Red Devils board, who are open to sanctioning his exit.

It’s thought the Turkish outfit would like to agree another season-long loan deal, although United will likely be adamant about cashing in so they can reinvest the funds throughout the window.

What’s next for out-of-favour Onana?

It’s safe to say that the 30-year-old has no future at Old Trafford, anyway.

Senne Lammens instantly impressed after he signed from Royal Antwerp on deadline day last summer, and he has since firmly cemented himself as Carrick’s No.1.

Second-choice Altay Bayindir will be on the move after the World Cup, but INEOS are planning to sign a new shot-stopper to replace the Turkish international, rather than reintegrating Onana.

United shelled out a whopping £47.2 million to sign him back in 2023 from Inter Milan, granting Erik ten Hag yet another addition whom he’d previously coached at Ajax.

Onana’s endless catalogue of costly errors and mistakes meant United were ready to call it quits just two years into his contract. Yet, to do so, suitors have to be there and willing to pay for him.

That wasn’t the case last year, hence why the club could only facilitate a loan.
