Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Borussia Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton.
The Red Devils already have five centre-backs vying for two starting roles in Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro, and Ayden Heaven.
Moreover, Noussair Mazraoui and Luke Shaw might be full-backs at trade, but they’re also capable of filling in at the heart of the backline if ever required.
Nevertheless, with Martinez and De Ligt struggling to remain fit, Michael Carrick has reportedly requested defensive reinforcement.
Man Utd considering an offer for Waldmera Anton
This season, De Ligt spent the bulk of the campaign nursing a back injury. His ordeal began in November, and he eventually succumbed to surgery in May, and it could be keep on the sidelines until the autumn.
As for Martinez, he made his return from an ACL tear in December, but his momentum was interrupted by a few injury problems.
United secured Maguire’s services for another year through a contract extension, while Heaven performed admirably in the final months of the campaign.
But according to The Mirror journalist Jeremy Cross, Carrick has requested the arrival of a new defender to avoid a shortage of options should the Dutchman and Argentine spend extended time on the sidelines.
The source claims that the Red Devils are considering a move for Dortmund’s Anton, who joined Germany’s camp ahead of the World Cup
Why Anton intrigued Man United
The Hannover youth product made a name for himself in the Bundesliga during his four-year stint at Stuttgart between 2020 and 2024. BVB bought him for €22.5 million, and they have him under contract until June 2028.
The 29-year-old has been a stalwart at the back for the German giants. He made 44 appearances in all competitions this season, contributing with three goals.
Anton is originally a central defender, but he can also play at right-back. Therefore, he often featured on the right side of Dortmund’s three-man backline this campaign.
At this stage of his career, the physically imposing defender has garnered enough experience but remains hungry for success, as he has yet to win a trophy on the senior level. Moreover, the German international might be willing to accept a second-fiddle role at Man Utd.
Transfermarkt estimates his current value at €18 million (or £15m), but the source claims MUFC are weighing up a £35 million offer, which might be considered an excessive figure.
