Manchester United have no active plans to sign Michael Carrick’s former Middlesbrough pupil, Hayden Hackney.
The Red Devils have already begun their midfield overhaul by parting ways with Casemiro. They’re also hoping to receive suitable offers for Manuel Ugarte, who hasn’t been able to produce convincing displays over the past two seasons.
Atalanta’s Ederson is set to become Man Utd’s first summer signing, with the two clubs sorting out the final details in their agreement. Nevertheless, another two midfielders could join the Brazilian and Kobbie Mainoo.
Hayden Hackney is unlikely to sign for Man Utd
In recent months, Hackney has been mentioned as one of the midfielders on Jason Wilcox’s shortlist. The 23-year-old is a Middlesbrough youth product who established himself as a regular starter at the club during Carrick’s tenure at Riverside Stadium.
According to The Athletic journalist Mark Critchley, the England U21 international is indeed a profile like by MUFC, but the club isn’t expected to pursue him, as several other profiles remain ahead of him.
“As my colleague David Ornstein has reported, United like Hayden Hackney, who played under Carrick at Middlesbrough, but he is lower on their list of targets and a move to Old Trafford is not anticipated at present,” wrote Critchley, who also revealed that the player’s most likely destination is Everton.
Why Hackney & United are making a sensible decision
With Ederson almost in the bag, Man Utd fans are awaiting the arrival of a marquee midfielder, either with Premier League experience, like Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali, or top-level achievements at the biggest stages, like Aurelien Tchouameni.
Unfortunately for Hackney, he doesn’t fall in either category. In fact, the Redcar native has yet to play in the top flight.
Therefore, an immediate move to Man Utd could be too big a jump for the young man, who first has to adjust to Premier League football before warranting a transfer to one of the country’s elite.
While Carrick won’t be required to win the Premier League in his first full season at Old Trafford, he is expected to deliver a solid campaign and go as far as possible on all fronts, including the Champions League.
To navigate the packed schedule, the Man Utd boss needs players with vast experience and familiar with the top level’s requirements.
