Manchester United could stand a genuine chance at landing Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall this summer.
The Red Devils are currently in the midst of a major midfield revamp, but they also need to sign a new left-back.
This season, Luke Shaw started in all 38 Premier League fixtures, but replicating this admirable feat remains unrealistic, especially with the club back in the Champions League.
Tyrell Malacia, who had already been reduced to an afterthought at Old Trafford, will leave on a free transfer, while Patrick Dorgu appears more suited to an advanced role on the pitch, thus raising the need for a new left-back.
Lewis Hall unhappy with his situation at Newcastle
In recent months, Man Utd have been linked with several profiles for the left-back spot, but many reliable sources have identified Hall as the club’s primary target.
The 21-year-old is a Chelsea youth product who joined Newcastle United in the summer of 2024. Despite his young age, he has acquired important experience in the Premier League and has also made 10 appearances in the Premier League.
While convincing the Magpies to part ways with the England international remains a complicated task, British football journalist Ben Jacobs believes the player’s desire to change the air could give an opening for the Red Devils.
During his appearance on the United Stand, the transfer market insider revealed that Hall is no longer satisfied with his status at Newcastle, and that contract talks haven’t advanced at all.
“A new deal between Lewis Hall and Newcastle is not moving; he is now more unsettled. The mood HAS SHIFTED; it is one to watch,” said Jacobs.
“While Lewis Hall hasn’t outright asked Newcastle to leave, he is said to be very unhappy with the end of the season – not specifically unhappy at Newcastle, but with Dan Burn overtaking him in the left back position, and not featuring in the England World Cup squad
“Hall is prepared to explore his options, and will then either ask to leave, or use said options to negotiate a better deal with Newcastle.

Why Man Utd should go all in for Hall?
If Man Utd are prepared to spend a handsome but not outrageous amount on a long-term solution for the left-back role, then Hall is arguably the ideal choice.
At the age of 21, the Slough native still has a large room for improvement, but has already shown more than enough to warrant a chance at the highest level. This season, he has made 47 appearances in all competitions, contributing with a goal and two assists.
Hall would also have the opportunity to learn the trade from the vastly experienced Shaw while his role in the team slowly grows without being burdened with a large responsibility from the outset.
Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Man Utd can find an agreement with Newcastle, who might be keen to keep the player, despite his current concerns.
