Should Manchester City fail to agree a deal for Elliot Anderson, they would reportedly turn their attention to another Manchester United target.
Indeed, Fabrizio Romano revealed last night that Sandro Tonali is ‘emerging as [a] strong option’ on City’s shortlist.

City have first offer for Anderson rejected
It comes after the Blues saw their opening offer for Anderson rebuffed by Nottingham Forest.
While the exact sum of their proposal is unconfirmed, ESPN has revealed that City value the midfielder in the region of £80 million, whereas Forest will hold out for around £120 million – so there’s quite a way to go before any terms are agreed.

Even if the player himself wants the move, it’s unlikely Anderson would go as far as handing in a transfer request or forcing the switch, so the ball is entirely in City’s court to meet Forest’s demands.
United still targeting Anderson and Tonali
United, meanwhile, have yet to get involved.
It’s well known by this point that Anderson is their No.1 target in the lead-up to the window, but reports have strongly suggested that the midfielder would prefer to join City instead.
Tonali is another name who’s been heavily linked with an Old Trafford transfer in recent weeks, as INEOS continue their search for young but Premier League-proven talents to add to Michael Carrick’s ranks before 2026/2027 gets underway.
The 25-year-old boasts a plethora of experience across Europe in his senior career, as well as 32 Champions League appearances, with United currently preparing for their return to the competition.

Newcastle United are, of course, unwilling to part ways with one of Eddie Howe’s most trusted and influential men.
However, the Italian international is adamant about continuing to play in the UCL next season, which Newcastle are unable to offer him after finishing 12th.
