Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek is returning from a superb campaign at Bristol, but he’s unlikely to linger at Carrington beyond the summer.
This season, Senne Lammens has been a true revelation at Old Trafford. He was voted as the Premier League’s Best New Signing. The Belgian cemented himself as the undisputed No.1 at Old Trafford.
Earlier this week, 40-year-old Tom Heaton signed a one-year extension. The veteran will continue to serve as the third-choice shot-stopper.
However, the identity of the second-choice goalkeeper remains unclear, as Altay Bayindir has been heavily linked with a return to Turkiye, particularly to Besiktas.
Why Radek Vitek won’t stay at Man Utd
If Bayindir is to leave Man Utd in the summer, United must find a new understudy for Lammens. In recent months, Vitek surfaced as an internal solution, especially following his exploits at Bristol City.
The 22-year-old performed ‘outrageous’ saves and was hailed for his ‘exceptional’ performances. The Robins picked him as the club’s Player of the Season.

But according to BBC journalist Simon Stone, Vitek is unlikely to stay at Man Utd next summer, as the shot-stopper has reiterated his desire to play regularly. Therefore, he won’t fancy a secondary role, not even at Man Utd.
Stone weighed in on the Czech’s future during his appearance on the Stretford Paddock, revealing that United are open to sending the custodian on another loan move, potentially to a foreign league. This would allow the management to assess him at a higher level, and potentially cash in on a larger transfer should his market value increase.
Nevertheless, the journalist leaves the door open for an immediate sale this summer.
Who should be Man Utd’s second-choice goalkeeper?
Following his positive experience in the Championship, many would consider Vitek an upgrade on Bayindir, who hasn’t always convinced.
Andre Onana will also return from his loan spell at Trabzonspor, and is said to be seeking a new chance at Old Trafford. However, reinstating the Cameroonian remains highly unlikely at this stage, as the club wouldn’t want to disrupt Lammens’ meteoric rise.
The best solution, as Stone suggested, would be to buy an experienced goalkeeper who would be happy to serve as a backup and is competent enough to fill in for the young Belgian when required.
Whilst finding such a profile for a low cost in the Premier League might prove difficult, Man Utd’s Head of Recruitment, Christopher Vivell, might have a trick up his sleeve, perhaps picking up a solid keeper from the Bundesliga.
