Manchester United are reportedly readying an offer for controversial Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero.
The club’s Football Director, Jason Wilcox, and his collaborators have a busy summer ahead, and they’re already off to a quick start by securing a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson, with only the official announcement missing.
The Brazilian international should be followed by another two midfielders to complete the department’s overhaul, while trusted sources also expect Man Utd to recruit a new left-back, and potentially a right-footed left-winger.
Moreover, some observers insist that Man Utd must bring in a new central defender.
Man United ready to launch an onslaught for Cristian Romero
In recent months, several sources have tipped Romero to leave Spurs in the summer, arguing it is past time for the 28-year-old to embark on a new career chapter after four years in North London.
The Cordoba native is Tottenham’s captain, and remains tied to the club with a contract valid until June 2029. However, his desire is to play at the biggest stage, while Spurs finished their woeful campaign 17th in the Premier League table, only securing their place in the top flight on the final day of the season.
According to Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, Man Utd are ready to seize the opportunity by submitting a bid for Romero.

Transfermarkt estimates Romero’s current value at €45 million (or £39 million), but he would likely command a heftier fee, as Spurs will not allow their skipper and longtime stalwart to leave without putting up a fight.
Why Man Utd shouldn’t pursue Romero
The Red Devils currently have five centre-backs vying for two roles in Michael Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 system.
Harry Maguire agreed to a one-year extension earlier this season, so he’ll remain alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, while Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven will be pushing for more space as they continue to develop their game.
On paper, United have enough options to negotiate a packed schedule, but the caveat is that De Ligt has been out of action since November and has recently undergone back surgery, so his rehabilitation process could take some time.
Martinez, who plays alongside Romero at the international stage, has also been enduring physical problems since returning from the ACL tear he suffered in February 2025.
But while many feel that an additional option is needed, Romero might not be the ideal fit.
In recent years, Man Utd have had their fair share of controversial episodes on and off the pitch, but have only recently found peace under Michael Carrick. The 28-year-old, who was chosen as the second-dirtiest player in the Premier League last season, is widely considered to be a natural leader, but he might find it difficult to blend in a squad where he’d have to earn a starting role all over again.
The former Atalanta star had performed admirably alongside Martinez during the last World Cup in Qatar. Nevertheless, many observers would argue that this partnership has its holes, which would be exposed during a long campaign, especially with both players considered a bit too impulsive, not to mention their aerial limitations.
Moreover, Romero’s arrival would likely derail the momentum of Yoro and Heaven, who need playing time to improve their game.
