United rule out Robert Lewandowki move this summer

Manchester United will be in the market for an experienced centre-forward this summer to play backup to Benjamin Sesko.

However, it’s unlikely that they will pursue a move for free agent Robert Lewandowski.

Why have United been linked with Lewandowski?

The Polish legend confirmed last month that he would be leaving Barcelona upon the expiration of his contract after four years with the club.

Such news then led to former Red Giuseppe Rossi urging United to bring Lewandowski to Old Trafford, saying it’d be a ‘no-brainer’ to snap him up on a short-term deal while Sesko continues to develop his game.

“Of course, Lewandowski would be an incredible asset for the young players, providing his experience and big-game knowledge,” said Rossi.

“With Benjamin Sesko being a young, growing player, having someone like Lewandowski on the team would only benefit him. It’s a no-brainer. He has a huge resume, and on a short-term deal, it’s a win-win.”

While some fans may agree, based on the striker’s illustrious goalscoring record, it’s safe to say that he just isn’t a signing INEOS would look to make.

Since arriving at United in February 2024, the co-owners have not sanctioned a signing over 30 years of age.

It goes without saying that while Lewandowski would undoubtedly still be able to do a job up front, the 37-year-old is seeing out the golden years of his career and is past his prolific prime.

What’s United’s stance on signing veteran Lewandowski?

Manchester Evening News journalist Tyrone Marshall has verified that INEOS are unwilling to abandon their transfer rules just because the former Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund star is available.

He said: “United do want an experienced back-up for Sesko, but someone of a lower profile than Lewandowski, who would still command huge wages and is such a big name he would probably expect to start ahead of the Slovenian.

“He’s a great player and his record last season was still good, but at 37, there is no way he fits into United’s structure or the style of play Michael Carrick wants.”
