Fabrizio Romano admits that Manchester United have yet to fully decide whether or not to buy Ederson from Atalanta.
The Premier League giants need to buy three new midfielders this summer following Casemiro’s exit and Manuel Ugarte’s long-term injury.
While Ederson has long been considered the first of the three acquisitions, doubts are beginning to creep in, as the weeks have passed without an official confirmation.
Andrey Santos & Ederson are both set for United medicals
On Wednesday afternoon, multiple reliable sources confirmed that United were able to reach an agreement with Chelsea for Andrey Santos. David Ornstein believes the 22-year-old will join the Red Devils on a £48m plus £2m deal.
After confirming the operation as well, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed this morning that Santos will undergo his medical later today (Thursday), before signing for the Old Trafford outfit.
“Andret Santos to Manchester United is done, and today it’s time for the medical,” said the transfer market expert in the latest video uploaded on his official YouTube channel.
“The player is travelling for medical test and contract signing. Manchester United close Andrey Santos deal.”
On the other hand, Romano addressed Ederson’s situation with less certainty. While he had previously suggested that the 26-year-old’s arrival is only a matter of time, he now reveals that Man Utd will only render their final decision after assessing his second medical test.
“Also medical, second medical check for Ederson will be this week. And this week, probably from now to the weekend, we will understand any moment if Man United will proceed with the Ederson deal with Atlanta or not. So we wait for the second medical for Ederson.”
Could Ederson’s move to Man Utd collapse
While no signs suggest that MUFC are planning to backtrack on their agreement with Atalanta, it appears that the results of the first medical (which Ederson underwent during his time in the Brazilian national camp) weren’t conclusive enough.
However, it remains unclear whether this was due to the player’s condition or instead the procedure adopted by the medical team.
Either way, Man Utd officials should have a clearer picture once Ederson undergoes his medical at a facility endorsed by the club.
So while it is too early to jump the gun and suggest the deal is at risk, Romano’s words hint that we have yet to truly reach the finish line.
