Jason Wilcox poured praise on Youri Tielemans after facilitating his arrival from Aston Villa this week.

The player underwent a successful medical on Monday before his transfer was announced on Tuesday.

What did Wilcox have to say about Tielemans?

Reacting to the signing via club media, Director of Football Wilcox said: “Youri has consistently been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League throughout the past seven years. He has all of the technical qualities, as well as the ambition and mentality, to thrive at Manchester United.

“Youri’s consistency is exceptional, and he will add further composure, creativity and leadership to our squad. We are delighted to welcome a player of his influence and experience, both on the pitch and within the dressing room, as we continue to build a team ready to challenge for the biggest honours.”

In fairness, Tielemans is as Premier League-proven as fans could ask for.

He has spent the last eight seasons plying his trade in the English top flight, racking up 244 appearances – most of which came for Leicester City.

The 29-year-old, who captained Belgium at the World Cup prior to their quarter-final exit, then departed Leicester for Villa when his contract expired in the summer of 2023, and he has since played an integral role at the heart of Unai Emery’s squad.

Tielemans becomes United’s second summer signing

Tielemans followed Andrey Santos through the doors at Carrington, with United finalising both deals in quick succession.

INEOS aren’t done yet, either, as it’s expected they will make one more signing in midfield to ensure Michael Carrick’s squad is adequately reinforced and strengthened before United’s Champions League return next term.

Then, attention could well turn to the attack, where a left winger may be sought if Marcus Rashford is sold.
