Despite leading twice against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, the spoils were ultimately shared between Manchester United and the hosts.

Michael Carrick’s men have now lost, won and drawn in their opening three Premier League fixtures.

Indeed, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko’s best efforts were not enough for the Red Devils to head back to Manchester with all three points in the bag.

United were holding on to their 2-1 lead from the 88th minute, when Benjamin Sesko headed home from a stellar Luke Shaw cross, until the sixth minute of injury time.

That was when scrappy play inside the area resulted in Ainsley Maitland-Niles capitalising on a loose ball outside the box and firing a long-range strike past Senne Lammens.

Tyrique George had levelled for the Toffees the first time around, and while it was an outstanding finish on his part, questions will be asked of Senne Lammens, who was beaten at his near post.

How did Everton react?

Post-match, George provided a damning assessment of United’s game plan, as he told Sky Sports that Everton still had faith they could get a result even when they were trailing.

“We knew that we could get back into the game,” said the former Chelsea prospect. “That’s what we did. [A] really strong performance.”

It’s safe to say that Carrick will be enraged over the fact that his team were unable to see out the win in the dying embers of the contest.

Next up is United’s Champions League opener at home to Sabah on Thursday, September 10.

Then, it’s the first Manchester derby instalment of 2026/2027, with Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City making the short trip over to Old Trafford a week from today.
