Louis Saha claims that Manchester United should sign Edinson Cavani

Louis Saha has claimed that Manchester United have ‘missed a trick’ by not signing free-agent Edinson Cavani this summer.

The Uruguayan striker left Paris Saint-Germain after seven years with the club, upon the expiry of his contract. PSG’s Sporting Director announced the news at the start of June, after no short-team deal was made to allow him to see out their Champions League campaign.

Currently without a club, recent reports have strongly linked the 33-year-old with a move to Benfica. Although his wages are likely to be high, the free-agent would prove to be a shrewd signing for most clubs, given his prolific goal-scoring record.

The Red Devils were briefly linked with a move for Cavani at the start of the year, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was somewhat desperate for a new forward, after Marcus Rashford’s back injury.

The club opted for the loan signing of Odion Ighalo instead, with United extending this deal until January 2021. According to former Old Trafford striker Saha though, the club should have pursued Cavani.

He stated to the Football Index Podcast: “I think Manchester United are missing a trick by not signing Edinson Cavani this summer. I’ve followed him for many years and I’m gutted there doesn’t seem to be an interest there. For me, Cavani would be the best fit this summer.

“Cavani has a great eye for goal and his leadership would be a great asset. He has qualities that are very difficult to find on the transfer market.”

As a player with 300+ career goals, it is hard to argue with Saha’s latter points. Such qualities are hard to identify in the transfer market, and Cavani is certainly a name that guarantees goals.

However, Solskjaer is clearly happy with his squad option in Ighalo. Anthony Martial has flourished as the side’s starting number this season, with the manager opting for a backup striker that is content with a selective place on the bench.

With Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood also capable of operating through the middle, the striking department looks well-equipped for the time being.
