Middlesbrough have held talks about Michael Carrick becoming their new manager, with the former Manchester United caretaker left to consider whether it’s the right opportunity to warrant a return to the game.
The Championship side have been without a manager since they sacked Chris Wilder and that could open the door for Carrick to land his first permanent managerial role, after previously working under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – not to forget how the former midfielder spent so many years playing under Sir Alex Ferguson at a time Manchester United Tickets were difficult to get.
According to The Athletic, there is interest on both sides – but Carrick has yet to decide whether he wants to return to football just yet. It is understood that former Huddersfield manager Carlos Corberan is his main rival for the job.
The 41-year-old tops the shortlist of candidates still being considered by Boro chairman Steve Gibson and director of football Kieran Scott.
When Carrick hung up his boots, he quickly got involved in the coaching set up at United and it’s only now that he is getting to enjoy a break from football. It allows him to spend more time with his family and attend football matches as a supporter, like he did at the weekend in the away end at Goodison Park.
During his time as caretaker boss at United, Carrick led the way for wins over Villarreal and Arsenal, as well as a draw with Chelsea. It’s a very good record to have in what was a shambolic season for the Red Devils.
Carrick decided to call time on his United coaching career after Solskjaer’s dismissal. Reports suggest he was approached by Blackburn Rovers and Burnley, but he remains out of work.
The former United and England midfielder would have a huge job on his at Boro, who sit 21st in the Championship table, winning just three of their first 13 league games this season.
It’s a slap in the face for Boro fans who were expecting promotion to the Premier League.
All eyes are on Carrick for the Boro job.
Some reports suggest Carrick would like to bring old United allies Mike Phelan and Rene Mulensteen with him if he becomes Boro boss. That wouldn’t be too much of a surprise as most managers call on those they know best.
