Luke Shaw’s injury woes continue – defender could miss the rest of the season & Euro 2024

Sources inside Manchester United have revealed Luke Shaw could miss the remainder of the season after he suffered another injury blow during United’s win at Luton.

The left-back has already missed substantial time through injury this season, and his place in England’s Euro 2024 squad is now in doubt. He only managed 45 minutes in United’s away win at Aston Villa and was forced off again just before halftime at Kenilworth Road with an ankle issue.

Shaw’s return to the side has coincided with an upturn in form for United. Last season, he was a cornerstone of the league’s most formidable defence. Injury issues to various defenders have meant Erik ten Hag has struggled to name a consistent side.

Despite these issues, United has strung together four consecutive Premier League wins, keeping the possibility of Champions League qualification alive. Major Bookmakers have United amongst the teams with a solid chance to finish in the Top 4. With the top 3 all but sewn up, United face a battle with Aston Villa and Tottenham for the final qualification spot.

United fans have been left particularly annoyed at Shaw’s latest issues as United allowed left-back option Sergio Reguilón to return to Spurs in January. It was a move that many criticised, given Shaw’s injury record, Tyrell Malacia’s continued absence and the general lack of defensive cover in the squad.

Despite these reports, United have officially maintained that they hope Shaw can return before the end of the campaign. The fitness and injury department is an area of the club that will surely be subject to review under the new INEOS leadership, especially given the astonishing amount of injury issues this season.

Fans and pundits are keenly watching the changes that INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe might implement. A move away from older, high-earning players has been heavily rumoured, which could see Shaw’s long-term future at Old Trafford come into question.
