United welcomed struggling League One side Rochdale on Wednesday in what proved to be another poor and frustrating performance from the Reds. Plenty of possession and chances but Solskjaer’s men never looked like a side 2 leagues above the visitors.
Mason Greenwood opened the scoring in the second half before Rochdale’s 16-year-old right-back Matheson scored the goal of his life to take the game to penalties.
Sergio Romero: 6
Had nothing to do all night. Could do very little about the goal. Penalty save proved to be decisive.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 5
A good goal-line clearance in the second half but failed most of the times with his crossing. Needs to do better for Rochdale’s equalizer.
Axel Tuanzebe: 7
Good performance from United’s captain.
Phil Jones: 5
Off at half-time, unknown whether it was due to injury or not.
Marcos Rojo: 5
The Argentinian had six efforts at goal, similar to the game against Astana but did little of note.
Didn’t do much wrong but more is expected against a League One side fighting relegation. Scored his penalty.
Paul Pogba: 5
Probably didn’t expect to play 90 minutes but did his job as expected. Should’ve scored in the first half with a header, connecting with a great Mason Greenwood cross. It was harder to miss, really.
Jesse Lingard: 3
Supposed to be the creative player in the team by playing behind the striker but does very little to prove he’s good enough.
Andreas Pereira: 3
Some good shots followed by many poor crosses. Playing him on the wing seems pointless. Scored his penalty.
Tahith Chong: 6
A generous rating for a very inexperienced young man. It just didn’t work for Chong on the evening.
Mason Greenwood: 8
Another game another goal well taken. Cool as you like from the spot later on as well.
Brandon Williams: 7
On for Jones at half time for his senior debut at the club and did very well.
