Three strikers Manchester United could sign in January after Solskjaer hints at incomings

Being without Paul Pogba for almost the entire season has been a huge blow, Scott McTominay suffering knee ligament damage was a bigger one but the biggest blow of them all came on Sunday when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that Marcus Rashford has suffered a fracture in his lower back.

Solskjaer has since also hinted that the club might be forced to turn to the market for short-term solutions as plenty of goalscoring threat in Rashford will be missing for the next months. So who can United turn to this month? We take a look.

Edinson Cavani (Paris-Saint Germain, 32 y/o).
The Uruguayan is the all-time leading goalscorer of the dominant French club and has fallen out of favour at PSG. Despite struggling with injuries this term, the forward has been overlooked this season with new signing Mauro Icardi completely shunning him out of the starting eleven.

Cavani, who is out of contract in six months, has only started one game since August and has asked to leave the club. Leonardo, PSG sporting director confirmed this on Sunday. “Edinson (Cavani) has asked to leave us this month but we have refused an offer from Atlético Madrid. We will continue to talk,” he said.

The former Napoli forward has scored 10 goals in just 12 start this season for club and country, proving that despite creeping up on the latter stages of his career, he can still get the job done on the big stage. Last season he scored 18 goals in 21 appearances, 28 in 32 in 2017/18 and 35 goals in 36 games the season before that.

Kevin Volland (Bayer Leverkusen, 27 y/o).
As opposed to Cavani, bringing in someone like Volland wouldn’t be just a short-term fix but also long-term. The German striker has scored 7 goals this season and assisted as many. He primarily plays as a striker but can also play on the right, where he usually played before venturing into a central role.

Bayer Leverkusen had a fantastic 2018/19 campaign, qualifying for the Champions League and were looking for a title charge this term but decisions off the pitch have hurt them and their biggest stars could be looking to leave. Kevin Volland would add great competition for places in a team where both Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have nothing behind them to be scared of

Volland has been linked with moves to Arsenal, Chelsea and Bayern Munich in the past year and would be harder to acquire than Cavani but if the club are thinking long-term, he’s the better choice.

Paco Alcacer (Borussia Dortmund, 26 y/o).
The former Valencia and Barcelona forward has never nailed down a starting place at the German club since joining them in 2018 but still boasts the best minutes-per-goal ratio in their squad and one of the best in the league, second to only Lewandowksi (10+ apperances).

His 5 goals this season came from his first four games. Since then, he has only started two games and been brought on as a substitute for a couple of 5-minute cameos. The signing of Erling Braut Håland from RB Salzburg in January might prove to be what pushed Alcacer out of the door as he was left out of their squad to face Augsburg this weekend, despite being fully fit.

Last season, Paco Alcacer averaged 1.35 goals per 90 minutes played, an extraordinary feat. 18 goals in 26 appearances cemented him as Dortmund’s first choice striker, albeit not for very long.
