Romelu Lukaku has revealed that Ole Gunnar Solskjær had asked him to stay at United last summer but accepted that it was time for the Belgian to move on.
Lukaku was only given a look-in under Solskjær when Martial and Lingard both had their seasons cut short through injury last term but did well in the short timeframe he was given to make a case for other clubs to come in for him.
“One bad season can happen to anyone,” Lukaku said.
“I had to make a decision over going somewhere where I can learn other aspects of my game and work with somebody that wanted me as well.
“Ole wanted me to stay but I told him it was over. I didn’t have the energy. All credit to him because he’s been a man and he helped me make the move away.”
