Former Manchester City player says Kasper Schmeichel would “jump at the chance” to play for Manchester United

Amidst the madness that is the uncertainty over Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation, Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel has reportedly emerged as another potential candidate to take over in between the sticks at the Theater of Dreams.

As reported by Danish Ekstra Bladet, via the Sport Witness, Schmeichel is a ‘huge’ fan of the club that he spent his childhood watching his father win trophies with and would reportedly chomp at the bit to pull on the famous No. 1 jersey.

Schmeichel certainly fits the profile of a goalkeeper that United would go for, in spite of being 33, having just kept 13 clean sheets in 38 Premier League games this season (the same as David De Gea) for a highly rated Leicester side that finished fifth.

The Danish international went on to make 96 saves, including two stops from the spot, in another assuring season having solidified himself as one of the league’s best and winning the league with the Foxes in the recent past.

Ekstra Bladet looked to Mikkel Bischoff, a fellow Dane who played at Manchester City at the same time as Schmeichel, for some intel on the situation and the goalkeeper’s desire to pursue a move to the Red side of the city.

“Schmeichel is a huge United fan,” Bischoff said. “He always has been and always will be. It will be the biggest dream come true if he were to join United.

“If Kasper gets the opportunity to play just ten games for United, then he jumps. It’s simply so big for him. He is such a big fan that he will do anything to get to that club.”

Bischoff also touched on Schmeichel’s age, which could be an off putting factor for United with a much younger Dean Henderson waiting in the wings, comparing the Danish shot-stopper to some of United’s most successful keepers of the past.

“United will certainly not be deterred by his age,” Bischoff said. “The most successful goalkeepers at the club in recent years have been well into their thirties, (Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van Der Sar). He can easily play three or four good years there.”
