Solskjaer: ‘Why shouldn’t we aim for the Champions League final?’

Manchester United will be looking to maintain their 100% start to their Champions League campaign tonight, but they face a tricky ask in RB Leipzig.

The Germans arrive at Old Trafford as an undefeated side this season, sitting top of the Bundesliga after 5 games played. Like the Red Devils, they too won their opening CL group fixture, breezing past İstanbul Başakşehir 2-0.

Known for their attacking prowess, they do pose issues tonight, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has recognised. Speaking about the upcoming opponents, via manutd.com, the manager said: “They’ve got a very refreshing, impressive coach as well. He’s bright, he changes, he’s very proactive and it’s hard to prepare against coaches like Julian [Nagelsmann], but we’ve just got to focus on ourselves.

“He will come up with something and we will come up with something. They’ve had some very impressive improvement over the years and you see already they’ve started really well in the Bundesliga.”

Solskjaer claimed, though, that he has his sights set on reaching ten group points as quickly as possible, the ‘magic number’ that will see United qualify, according to the Norwaiegan.

It’s only match-day two, but the side are already looking forward, with the manager even bringing up the final itself. Asked whether he wants to enjoy the occasion of the competition, Solskajer replied: “Yes, enjoy it and make the most of it as well because we go out to win every single game of football that we play. We’ve got a good quality squad and I feel we can go into any game believing we can win it and I think that shows.

“We played one of the best teams in Europe [in PSG] and we beat them away from home, so why shouldn’t we aim for the final?”

Aspirations are high, but this is what the club needs to strive for. With no real expectation placed on United’s shoulders, the side have a free hit in this season’s competition.
