INEOS have let Ruben Amorim down in the transfer window so far: view

In the first week of July, Manchester United have only one signing to show for their efforts in the transfer window.

The Old Trafford faithful were optimistic that INEOS were on the cusp of overseeing a much-needed summer overhaul when United announced Matheus Cunha’s arrival early doors.

Such hopes were also heightened – you can be hopeful of a successful payout when testing your luck on Sweet Bonanza – after it was revealed Bryan Mbeumo had prioritised a move to the Red Devils over his other suitors.

Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur had established their interest in Brentford talisman, all of whom would provide him the opportunity to play Champions League football for the first time in his career.

Yet, Mbeumo, much to fans’ delight, made clear his desire to play for United and United only, leaving the ball in Brentford’s court to negotiate a deal that would see his wishes come to fruition.

A month on from the player’s preference being made public knowledge, INEOS are yet to reach an agreement that sees Mbeumo join Ruben Amorim’s ranks.

They have had two bids rejected thus far; initially, a £55 million proposal was made and swiftly rebuffed by the Bees board, before they also turned down a follow-up offer of £62.5 million all-in, which is the fee United paid to sign Cunha – albeit in instalments.

In the meantime, Amorim will be expecting to see his options strengthened across the field following the departures of Christian Eriksen (midfield), Victor Lindelof (centre-half) and Jonny Evans (centre-half).

Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford have also all been privately informed that they will play no part in the manager’s plans, meaning new attackers will be essential if the side has any chance of improving on a campaign that saw them finish 15th place and score just 44 league goals.

Ollie Watkins and even Ivan Toney have been touted as targets to lead the line in M16 next season, with both bolstering years of Premier League experience. However, with the former valued at a whopping £60 million, it’s safe to say outgoings will need to be sanctioned before the Reds can send a bid Aston Villa’s way.

Amorim’s men face a brutal start to the term, too. They will face three of the division’s big six in their opening five matches; first by hosting Arsenal on the opening day before taking part in their first Manchester derby of the campaign at the Etihad on September 13.

Exactly one week later, Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea will travel to M16 for a fiery clash at the Theatre of Dreams.
